Lightning storms on Friday night sparked five new wildfires in the northern area of the B.C. Interior.
All five of the wildfires were in the Cariboo Fire Centre, which includes the Chilcotin, Quesnel, Central Cariboo, and 100 Mile House areas. The B.C. Wildfire Management Branch reports that the largest fire is burning four hectares west of Anahim Lake. A three person initial attack crew was on site on Saturday, suppressing the fire with the support of airtankers and a helicopter. Sixteen more firefighters were on the way to help.

Initial attack crews were also fighting three small fires in the Big Bar area and a small fire southwest of Quesnel. Airtankers were supporting crews at one of the fires near Big Bar on Friday night, with crews mopping up on Saturday morning. The B.C. Wildfire Management Branch says that public reports helped crews to respond quickly to the wildfires and keep them small.
The Cariboo-Chilcotin area is expecting a weather downturn with an increase in thunderstorm activity, showers, and cooler temperatures. Because of the risk of lightning, officials are asking the public to report any smoke or fires by calling 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or dialing *5555 on your cellphone.

The biggest fire of note in the Cariboo Fire Centre is the Pelican Lake fire about 80 km northwest of Quesnel. This fire is now 50 per cent contained at 164 hectares. This blaze was also lightning caused and is burning in the same location as the historical wildfire near Pelican Lake in 2010. Those in the area can expect increased smoke over the next few days as fire crews conduct burn-offs for control lines.
Meanwhile, the Little Bobtail Lake Fire near Prince George grew on Saturday to 20,000 hectares due to strong winds.
