The Little Bobtail Lake fire is now estimated at 20,000 hectares, up from 17,000 hectares on Saturday. This increase is due to strong winds with gusts of up to 35 km/h on Saturday. The blaze grew along the northwest, southwest, and southeast flanks, and air crews are supporting those on the grounds to try to gain control of the recent activity.

The fire is now moving away from the Cluculz Lake and Highway 16 area, and it’s still 20 per cent contained.

Still no loss of structures from this massive blaze, though the evacuation order affecting 80 people is still in effect. Details available here. More than 300 personnel have been assigned to this fire, with a total of 270 firefighters, 13 helicopters, 22 pieces of heavy equipment, and 8 airtankers.

On Sunday, aircraft is supporting ground crews by cooling down spot fires, reinforcing dozer lines, and supporting safety routes for crews. The fire was first reported on Friday, May 8th and the cause is under investigation.

Though the Little Bobtail Lake fire is the largest wildfire facing crews in B.C., lightning during the May long weekend sparked five new wildfires in the B.C. Interior.
