After a week and a half of fighting the enormous blaze, firefighters now have the Little Bobtail Lake fire 30 per cent contained.

The fire still blazes southwest of Norman Lake and is currently at 25,000 hectares. Favourable conditions on Tuesday allowed fire crews to make excellent progress as they established control lines and reinforced existing ones, resulting in the 30 per cent containment.

Overnight, crews completed burn off operations along the fire’s north flank, working to eliminate patches of fuel left between the fire perimeter and the guard. The B.C. Wildfire Management Branch says crews may conduct burn off operations again on Wednesday morning, if conditions allow. Temperatures in the area are cooler, but ignition operations show that there are still dry pockets that could easily burn.

There has been no loss of structures in this fire, and currently 315 firefighters are on site, as well as 11 helicopters, 38 pieces of heavy equipment, and 6 airtankers.

The fire is believed to be human-caused, and RCMP and the Wildfire Management Branch are jointly investigating.
