A Vancouver Island woman recently purchased a bunch of organic bananas and got more than she bargained for.

Christy Smith took to Facebook to share the shocking discovery of a live scorpion, which hitched a ride in her produce. Smith purchased the bananas from a local Thrifty Foods store in Victoria where she found what she calls an “extra bit of protein tucked into my organic bananas”.

“It moved when its legs when I peeled off the sticker, after it had already been in my fruit bowl for a week,” said Smith online.

Thrifty Food commented on the discovery saying, “Tropical fruit imports can bring tropical insects from time to time, but this is a surprise to see. We do have our quality guarantee, so you are (of course) welcome to a full refund as well. Thank you very much for your ninja reflexes and sense of humour when dealing with this intruder.”

While it is not common to find tropical insects with produce, it does happen and this is a good reminder to inspect carefully and wash produce after you purchase it.
