UPDATE: The Big Beaver Creek fire has now grown to 8,000 hectares in size, but the Alaska Highway has reopened to traffic. Single lane traffic is open in both directions and motorists will be piloted while travelling through the affected area. If you are travelling along the highway from 386km to 418km expect delays.

Strong winds in the area have significantly increased fire behaviour and the fire has crossed the Alaska Highway as it has grown to over 300 hectares in size. The highway is closed between 386 km (Mile 250) and 418 km (Mile 260). Air tankers have been called in to assist ground crews, but due to the extreme fire activity and safety concerns they had to be pulled off. Visibility remains an issue and continues to challenge wildfire personnel.

The Alaska Highway will remain closed in both directions until it is safe for the public to travel through the area. Smoke will be visible for surrounding areas. The fire was discovered on Sunday, July 5th and the cause is believed to be lightning. The fire is located approximately 50 kilometres south of Fort Nelson, but is not threatening any homes in the community.
