The next phase of the expansion of Highway 1 between Kamloops and Chase is set to take place between Hoffman’s Bluff and Chase Creek.
The federal government announced $18.3 million, and the B.C. government will add $29.1 million to expand the Trans-Canada Highway from two lanes to four lanes to increase safety for highway users and contribute to better traffic flow in the region.
“These projects on the Trans-Canada Highway have a firm foundation in partnerships, and today we have the funding in place to continue this upgrade all the way to Chase,” said Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone. “Through this work, we are improving the quality of life for British Columbians by providing better, safer connections between communities.”
This funding will expand seven and a half kilometres, and will be a continuation of improvements currently in progress between Monte Creek and Hoffman’s Bluff.
The provincial government will also invest $47 million to improve the remaining two and a half kilometres between Chase Creek Road and Chase West.
The federal funding is a part of the New Building Canada Plan, which will provide $53 billion in funding for the improvement of infrastructure nationwide between 2014 and 2024.
“We are pleased to work with the province of British Columbia to approve projects under the New Building Canada Fund, to ensure that infrastructure funding continues to flow in British Columbia as we focus on creating jobs, promoting growth, and building strong, prosperous communities across Canada,” said Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod. “We are proud to invest in this transportation project. It will increase commuter safety and improve the flow of traffic between Kamloops and Chase.”
The provincial funding is a part of B.C. on the Move and represents a priority in the plan to expand the Trans-Canada Highway to four lanes between Kamloops and Golden. Over $2.5 billion will be invested into improving the province’s transportation network over the next three years.
