BC Wildfire Service crews are responding to a new wildfire that is burning in the Cariboo Fire Centre.
The fire was discovered Tuesday afternoon. It is estimated at nine hectares in size, and it is burning 10 kilometres west of the rural community of Big Creek, which is about 90 kilometres southwest of Williams Lake.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
“Initially we were seeing quite active fire behaviour, but we were able to send air tankers and crews quickly and at this time we are seeing some good success and they’ve lowered the fire behaviour significantly,” said Emily Epp, Fire Information Office for the Cariboo Fire Centre.
There are three firefighters, three pieces of heavy equipment, and two helicopters on site, with an additional 20 firefighters on their way.
No structures are currently threatened by the new blaze.
“Favourably, the wildfire is actually moving towards the northwest, which is away from Big Creek and Fletcher Lake where there are some people who live nearby,” Epp said.
