Nearly two weeks after the Rock Creek wildfire was sparked, FortisBC has now restored permanent power to residents affected by the devastating blaze. Moving forward, crews are now working proactively to address potential fire impacts in the areas of Grand Forks and Christina Lake.
On August 22nd, FortisBC finished work on the 10-kilometre main line between Rock Creek and Westbridge, permanently restoring power to residents in Christian Valley, Beaverdell, and Carmi.
After restoring power to each individual property between Rock Creek and Westbridge, crews worked to rebuild and re-energize all secondary lines in the region.
Any customers still without electricity are asked to call the FortisBC customer service team, as crews will be in the area over the coming weeks to complete final clean-up tasks.
In addition, FortisBC is closely monitoring the Stickpin fire, which could impact the areas of Christina Lake and Grand Forks.
“We’ve assessed all these assets for risks and are taking steps to put protection measures in place where possible,” read an e-mail statement from FortisBC. “This includes clearing vegetation around natural gas and electric substations and electric poles, covering valve systems with protective thermal blankets and having fire suppression equipment at the ready.”
The hydro company has also mapped out alternate service routes to minimize possible service disruptions, should a fire cause damage to either natural gas or electric systems.
“If fire damage does occur, our operations and construction crews have developed plans in advance for restoration. Upwards of 20 crews are available to assist if necessary,” said a communications spokesperson for FortisBC.
Crews will continue to work closely with fire officials and take additional steps as necessary to keep the area safe for the public.
