One person is dead and another in hospital following a single vehicle collision on the Coquihalla Highway near Merritt.

According to Merritt RCMP, the BC Ambulance service responded to a report of the accident around 7:45 a.m. Monday morning. A north bound pick-up truck with two occupants left the roadway about four kilometres south of Merritt. The truck hit the ditch, and a 38-year-old male passenger was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to the Nicola Valley Heath Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The 24-year-old female driver was transported to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops with non-life threatening injuries. It is currently unknown at this time as to why the truck went off the highway, but according to police, the scene is consistent with other collision scenes where the driver is not paying attention.

Both passengers are residents of the Lower Mainland and no names have been released at this time. RCMP are still investigating the cause of the crash.
