A 61-year-old cyclist from Ontario is dead following a collision with a pick-up truck near Ucluelet.

According to the RCMP, shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, the cyclist was travelling towards Ucluelet on Highway 4 when he lost control of his bicycle and crossed the centre line into oncoming traffic. The man collided with an east bound truck and sustained critical injuries. Despite the efforts of a first-aid responder working with a crew nearby, and two other motorists including two retired physicians, the cyclist died.

"Despite the isolated location where this crash occurred, the cyclist received immediate medical care from several people with emergency medical training. Despite their best efforts, he could not be saved," stated Sgt. Jeff Swann, Commander of the Ucluelet RCMP. “I'd like to express our gratitude to the many people who did their best to help him, and offer our condolences to his family and loved ones.”

There was heavy rainfall at the time of the crash and limited visibility. Preliminary evidence indicates that the pick up driver was operating their vehicle in a safe manner, relative to road conditions. No charges are being contemplated against the driver at this time.
