A Vancouver actor has been named as the Black Power Ranger in the upcoming Power Rangers movie.

Ludi Lin, who studied theatre at UBC, is based in Beijing and was recently announced as the character by the production company. Lin is a relatively new name on the big screen in North America, but has found success with television shows. His biggest role was in the Chinese made fantasy movie Monster Hunt.

The popular 1990s television show is getting a major reboot as the live action movie is set to debut in 2017. The film features a group of high-school kids who are infused with unique superpowers, and harness those powers to save the world.

The film will be directed by Dean Israelite and will feature Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger and Darce Montgomery as the Red Ranger. The other Rangers have yet to be named. The movie is expected to be filmed in Vancouver.
