Human remains that were found in 2014 have been identified as belonging to a Valemount man who went missing in 2007.
The BC Coroners Service confirms that the remains belong to 47-year-old Richard Olson. The confirmation brings closure to the family and friends after they spent nine years wondering what happened to Olson.
Olsen went missing in 2007 and despite an extensive search, he could not be located. In 2014 human remains were found near Valemount, but a more advanced DNA analysis was required before they could be identified.
“An initiative by the BC Coroners Service’s Identification and Disaster Response Unit to profile difficult unidentified remains cases, involving the International Commission on Missing Persons, produced a DNA profile which was compared with DNA extracted from personal belongings and matched to Mr. Olson,” said the BC Coroner in a statement.
The cause of death has not been released. The BC Coroners Service continues to investigate.
