A Castlegar man is dead following yet another snowmobiling avalanche incident, this one in the Kootenay region.
RCMP confirms the local man died on Monday and his body was located on Tuesday. At approximately 10:00 p.m. on March 14th, a family member called the police to inform them that a man was overdue from a day long excursion. RCMP and the Castlegar Search and Rescue team were activated and headed to the area where the man’s snowmobile had been located by another rider. His machine was partially buried in an avalanche.
Tuesday morning SAR technicians flew into the area and assessed the current risks and carried out a search for the missing 45-year-old man. His body was recovered late Tuesday morning, but efforts to remove his remains from the area are still underway.
The man’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. This is just the latest avalanche related death in the province. Kamloops Search and Rescue were tasked with locating two missing skiers near Wells Grey Provincial Park Monday evening.
On March 8th a Sicamous man was killed while out on a solo snowmobiling trip in the OwlHead Mountains. Kevin James Oystryk was killed when he was struck by an avalanche. On March 14th another snowmobiler was killed in the Crowfoot Mountain area in the Shuswap when an avalanche came down in this region.
