A convicted murderer is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant after walking away from a Mission prison.

Blane Donald MacDougal, aged 68, is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for one count of escape from lawful custody.

MacDougal is being held at Ferndale minimum security prison in Mission and is considered a dangerous offender. He escaped from the prison in April 2008 while serving time for the killing of a gay man in Texas and raping three women while on parole.

MacDougal has a lengthy criminal record that dates back to 1968. At that time he escaped from a Canadian jail and fled to Texas where he was convicted of murder. He served almost 10 years in jail and in 1978 he was released on day parole. Within four months of his release he kidnapped and raped two young women. He was granted parole in 1989 and just days later he kidnapped and raped another young woman.

The warrant for his arrest was issued as of April 4 and details of his escape have not been released. MacDougal is described as Caucasian, six-feet-tall and 164 lbs. He has brown hair and brown eyes. The public is being warned not to approach him if they spot MacDougal but rather to call their nearest RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

**Editor's note: A previous version of this story indicated that MacDougal escaped for a second time from the prison, when in fact he is still wanted for escaping in 2008. KelownaNow apologizes for any misunderstanding this may have caused.
