Youth and young adults facing substance use disorders will soon have a residential treatment program in Keremeos.
The residential treatment program at the Cross at Keremeos facility will be reopening in 2017. The facility will have 22 beds, which will treat youth and young adults from 17-24 with substance use disorders.
"The new program at the Crossing at Keremeos will be a welcome addition to the network of services available to youth and young adults with serious substance use issues throughout B.C. - providing specialized care to meet the unique needs of vulnerable young people,” explained Minister of Health Terry Lake.
The goal of the program is to provide evidence-based treatment, education and support to help reduce problematic substance use, the potential of criminal activity, the risk of death and to improve the overall health and social well-being of people.
Families and clients will have tailored treatment plans, therapy, access to therapeutic recreational activities, life skills training and psycho-social education.
"The Crossing will provide the state-of-the-art specialized treatment and care that young people need to launch their recovery,” explained Stephanie Cadieux, Minister of Children and Family Development.
“Once they are ready to return to their home communities, MCFD staff will work with our partner agencies to ensure the youth have the ingredients for continued success, including appropriate housing and access to the community-based health services they may need."
Recent data suggested that 14 per cent of people aged 19-35 experience substance use disorders. For people between 15 and 24-years-old, 12 per cent say they’ve experienced mental health and substance use disorders.
