The RCMP is warning Canadians not to be duped by a fraudster calling residents to collect firearms licence renewal fees.
According to police, the caller identifies themselves as a Canadian Firearms Program (CFP) employee who is collecting renewal fees. The caller tells the victim they must pay immediately. In some cases, “RCMP” appears on the victim’s call display, but the calls are not from CFP.
In a statement from police, it indicates that the CFP contacts individuals by telephone to confirm a variety of information regarding licences, applications and authorizations, but does not collect fees over the phone.
“If you are in doubt that you are speaking to a real CFP employee, do not provide any information and hang up,” advises RCMP.
If you receive a suspicious call, you can contact the CFP at 1-800-731-4000 to confirm the legitimacy of the call.
