UPDATE (7:45 a.m.): Two contract workers are in hospital after a significant rockslide near Yoho National Park on Monday night.
According to Parks Canada, the rockslide occurred while workers were drilling holes to place explosives at the rock scaling site, approximately 16 km west of Field.
Two contractors working on site were rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and are still recovering.
A geotechnical assessment is now underway before workers clear the highway of the approximately 10,000 cubic metres of rockslide and debris that fell.
Motorists can anticipate heavier volumes of traffic on alternate routes.
As the cause of the incident is currently under investigation, Parks Canada would not comment further at this time.
Original story: Highway 1 is currently closed in both directions 16 kilometres west of Field because of a rock slide that obstructed the road Monday night.
According to DriveBC, a geotechnical re-assessment is expected by noon on Oct. 26.
For now, there is an alternate route via Highway 95 and Highway 93S.
Prior to the rock slide, rock blasting had been going on in Yoho National Park, 23 km west of Field.
