Temperatures are dipping low in British Columbia with frigid arctic air leading to an extreme cold warning for part of the province.

In Yoho Park and Kootenay Park a period of cold wind chills is expected, with wind chill values expected to hit -40C Wednesday morning and again into the night.

Anyone who isn’t dressed warmly is at risk for frostbite and hypothermia, especially the homeless, outdoor workers, those with diabetes, infants and seniors.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, wear warm socks, a hat and a scarf to cover their face.

An arctic outflow warning is in effect for the B.C. coast, Metro Vancouver, Victoria and the majority of Vancouver Island, with wind chills expected to hit -20C, persisting through Thursday at the earliest.

Environment Canada is advising people to limit outdoor activities and to cover exposed skin as much as possible.

Arctic outflow warnings are issued when bitterly cold air flows from the interior to coastal communities and the outflow winds create wind chill values of at least -20 for 6 hours or more.

In Kelowna, temperatures are expected to reach a high of -7C today, but will hit -13C Wednesday night, a low for the week.
