1 man shot dead by police, another in custody after possible hostage situation in BC

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is going to Tofino after a man was shot and killed by police during a potential hostage situation on Saturday. 

According to RCMP, at 9:30 pm, two officers attended a residence on the Opitsaht First Nation to locate a woman in distress. Upon arrival, officers were confronted by two men. 

At this point, one of the men was shot and killed. The other was taken into police custody. 

The woman was located by police and taken to the hospital for medical assessment. No one else was injured during the incident. 

Investigators are looking at all the possible factors that led to the man's death, including that the woman was being held against her will. The IIO BC is on scene today gathering evidence. 

No further information will be released at this time.
