A Lower Mainland man has been handed a significant fine and a lengthy hunting ban for an incident that took place in October 2020.
According to the BC Conservation Officer Service, the man shot two mule deer bucks with a crossbow around midnight in downtown Princeton.
The BCCOS was alerted to the incident when a witness called RCMP over concerns about seeing the man walking through town with a crossbow.
Conservation officers later took over the investigation.
“One deer was found deceased that night, while the second deer was spotted in the area the following day,” the BCCOS explained. “It had a crossbow bolt lodged in its chest and COs were forced to put it down.”
The man recently pleaded guilty in Princeton Provincial Court to the following offences under the BC Wildlife Act:
- Hunting without reasonable consideration for the lives, safety or property of other persons.
- Hunting during a closed season.
- Hunting during prohibited hours.
In addition, his crossbow was forfeited and he was ordered to retake the CORE hunter training program.
The BCCOS added: “Unsafe hunting practices, especially in the dark in a residential area, can put people at significant risk.”
