A rock climber has died after falling off the Stawamus Chief in Squamish.

The man, whose name and age are being withheld by Mounties, was found at about 1.45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

He had fallen about 30 metres, officials said. The dome is 702 metres high.

"The Stawamus Chief is a popular tourist destination for the Sea to Sky corridor, and the Squamish Emergency Services have attended to a number of incidents associated to this location over the past few months," Sgt. Sascha Banks said.

"We believe this incident to be a terrible accident and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time."

Squamish RCMP was assisted by the B.C. Ambulance Service and Squamish Search and Rescue.

The Coroners Service has now taken over the investigation while Mounties try to find the man’s next of kin.

"We do want to stress to those that visit our beautiful surroundings to be prepared, know your area, and please be safe in your adventures,” Sgt. Banks added.

"But also know if you are hurt or lost we (Squamish Emergency Services/Squamish SAR) have an amazing cross-section of people who will do everything to find you and help you."
