If you’re an insured driver in British Columbia, a cheque will be coming your way soon.

After delays due to a cyberattack, ICBC is back on track mailing out COVID-19 rebate cheques to 2.86-million British Columbians.

With the cyberattack in the rear-view mirror, the insurance corporation says that all of the cheques will be in the mail by the end of the month.

“Two weeks ago, ICBC began mailing small batches of COVID-19 rebate cheques directly to eligible customers,” explained a release from ICBC.

“Large-scale distribution through the vendor started April 6 and, as of Thursday, April 8, approximately 940,000 cheques have been issued.”

The rebates are coming from the estimated $600 million that ICBC saved due to a major decrease in crashes and costs as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.

Most customers who had vehicles insured for all or part of the six-month period between April 1 and Sept. 30, 2020, will receive an average rebate of $190.

It will be around 19% of the premium a customer paid for coverage during that six-month stretch.

ICBC is proceeding with mailing out the cheques using its third-party vendor, but with extra security measures in place.

An investigation into the cyberattack that delayed the cheques in March confirmed that no ICBC customer information was obtained by unauthorized parties
