Ridesharing could be on its way to B.C.
BC Green Party leader, Andrew Weaver, announced on Monday that he would re-introduce legislation to enable ridesharing this fall.
Weaver has twice introduced the Ridesharing Enabling Act already, once in April 2016 and again in February 2017.
On Monday, Weaver said that the government can’t stick its head in the sand any longer when it comes to new technology.
“All parties want to see B.C. be a leader in the emerging economy,” he said. “To do so, government must take a proactive, responsive approach that considers the wide-ranging impacts of technological innovation.”
He added that he was encouraged by the fact that all three parties agreed to bring ridesharing to B.C. in the past election.
Instructions to do so were included in the Premier’s mandate letter to B.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Claire Trevena.
The mandate letter includes no timeline, however, and British Columbians continue to wait.
“In this new minority government, we have an opportunity to work together to advance good public policy,” said Weaver. “I invite my colleagues on both sides of the house to discuss this legislation with me in advance of its introduction.”
