The race to find space for mega cannabis growing facilities is showing no signs of slowing down.
An Alberta-based medical marijuana grower has announced plans to open a manufacturing facility in Kamloops.
News of the B.C. expansion comes after Sundial Growers, based in Olds, Alberta, officially signed a sizeable deal with B.C.’s Alliance of Beverage Licensees.
The BC Liquor Distribution Branch announced in February that it will open the first government-run, non-medicinal cannabis retail stores by the end of the summer.
Sundial will likely supply these stand-alone cannabis stores with the 20 million grams stipulated in the new deal, along with cannabis related products once consumer marijuana use is legalized.
Sundial broke ground on a $110 million manufacturing facility in central Alberta last year and will initially use that facility to supply B.C. with plans to shift production to a new facility in Kamloops once that becomes licensed and operational.
In a release, CEO Torsten Kuenzlen called the move an "important milestone for Sundial" as it prepares to enter the consumer market.
There is no word yet as to the timing of the Kamloops facility's opening, its exact location, or the number of people who will be employed there.
