British Columbians are being urged by the BC SPCA to show support for Bill C-84.
The bill establishes a broader definition of bestiality and expands provisions against animals used for fighting.
It would cover promoting, arranging and profiting from animal fighting, as well as breeding, training or transporting an animal to fight.
The bill would also implement a ban on having any type of an arena for the purposes of animal fighting.
While bestiality is already banned, it would amend its definition in the criminal code to clarify that it involves any contact between a person and an animal for sexual purposes.
This would effectively close a legal loophole, which was discovered in a case that went to Supreme Court in 2016.
Those convicted of bestiality would also be able to be banned from owning pets and registered on Canada’s National Sex Offender Registry.
Bill C-84 was introduced by former Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould and includes amendments to Canada’s criminal code.
It’s currently before the House of Commons for third reading after it passed the committee.
