Vaccine mandates for teachers has been a hot topic in British Columbia over recent weeks.

Earlier in October, Premier John Horgan announced that a potential vaccine mandate for teachers would be up to individual school boards.

Last week, the Province released guidance that provided K-12 school boards with a “roadmap” to creating their own custom policy on whether teachers would need vaccinations to continue working.

As school boards continue to consider this major decision, the BC Teachers’ Federation has revealed that around 94% of its members are fully vaccinated.

The numbers come from a survey sent out to a random sample of 15,378 BCTF members, which resulted in 6,183 responses.

“After initial data cleaning, the final analytical sample is made up of 5,996 currently working BCTF members,” the BCTF explained.

The results showed that 94.1% (5,645) of teachers were fully vaccinated.

Just over 1% of respondents (64) were partially vaccinated, with 41 of them planning on getting a second shot, 15 of them unsure and eight not planning to get another dose.

Another 2.3% (135) of respondents said they were not vaccinated, with the majority of them (104) saying they did not plan on getting a COVID-19 vaccine.

Another 22 said they were unsure if they would get vaccinated, while five said they were not eligible for vaccination and four said they are planning to get vaccinated soon.

Just under 2% of respondents said they prefer not to answer about their vaccination status.
