A West Vancouver man has died after trying to rescue his dog from a fast flowing creek on Friday.

Shortly after 9 pm on May 19, the West Vancouver Police and fire department were called to Cypress Falls Park where the man, who was in his forties, had gone missing after entering the creek.

A release from the police explains that the man and his wife had been walking the dog in the park when it was swept away after entering the water.

Tragically, the man was also swept away.

The fire department and North Shore Rescue team worked well into the night to locate the man, but were not successful.

Shortly after 8 am on Saturday, the man’s body was recovered from the creek. The dog was also found deceased.

The police department will not be releasing the man’s name or any other information to respect his family, who have been referred to the victim services department.

“This was not the outcome we had all hoped for and it is an enormous tragedy for the family of the victim and our community. Our hearts go out to them,” said Sgt Mark McLean.
