Police on Vancouver Island are investigating after the death of a child on Friday.

According to Duncan RCMP, at 9 pm, emergency services were called an area motel after hearing about an unresponsive child.

First responders attempted life-saving efforts and transported the child to a local hospital. Despite numerous life-saving attempts, the 6-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The North Cowichan Duncan General Investigation Section has assumed conduct of the investigation with support from the Forensic Identification Section. Officers will remain in the area today.

In addition to NCDGIS, the BC Coroners Service is also looking to find the cause of death.

"The North Cowichan Duncan Victim Services is engaged and are supporting the family during this difficult time," said S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet.
