The professional mountain biking community is in mourning following the sudden death of Jordie Lunn.

Considered a legend in the sport, the 36-year-old from Parksville, BC died after suffering a fatal head injury while trail riding in Baja, Mexico on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

“Jordie lost his life doing exactly what he loved,” said Lunn’s family in a statement on Friday.

“Jordie had an incredible 20+ year career as a mountain biker. He will always be cherished for his heart and love that he gave to his family, friends, and fans, as well as the incredible talent that he had on his bikes.”

Lunn achieved multiple awards and accolades on his bike, including a successful career on Canada’s downhill team and as the winner of several "best trick" competitions across the world at events such as Whistler Crankworks.

He was also well known for his self-produced mountain bike series “Rough AF” which gathered hundreds of thousands of YouTube views and featured awe-inspiring stunts.

On Vancouver Island, the heavily-tattooed rider is being fondly remembered as a friend, coach and mentor to many up and coming riders.

“Jordie's appearance was intimidating; a big man, covered in tattoos, gold teeth, and always wearing the most ridiculous kit on the mountain. But that was in stark contrast to his gentle nature and pure friendliness. It didn't matter if you were a fellow pro, a guy in a suit, or a young fan, he had time for you,” read a statement from mountain bike site Pinkbike.com.

“His enthusiasm was always infectious, and his outlook always positive. There are few people in this world so universally loved and respected by their peers and fans. The kids he coached absolutely loved him.”
