In May, devastating news came from Cache Creek after their volunteer fire chief Clayton Cassidy was swept away by flood waters while checking creek flow levels.

The news deeply saddened much of the province as Cassidy was devoted family man and member of the community.

When Harpaul Nandhra, a mother of three who lives on Vancouver Island, heard the news she felt the need to do something meaningful for Cassidy's family.

"I know what its like to lose a spouse and my heart hurt for the entire family," said Harpaul Nandhra. "I had done a similar portrait for a good friend after the loss of a loved one, so I knew it was a meaningful gesture I could offer the family."

The illustrated portrait took Nandhra an entire day to create, when she finished the portrait, she reached out and sent it to Cassidy’s wife Rose.

“I sent the portrait to Rose, and heard back from her that she loved it,” says Nandhra. “It was very touching. I got quite a few thank you messages from different family members."

Nandhra works as education assistant on Vancouver Island and is not a trained artist but has drawn her whole life as a hobby.

"It's nice to let people know you're thinking of them in a time of need and I'm glad I was able to do it for Rose and her family."
