Coroners service identifies victims of Fernie Memorial Arena ammonia leak

The three men who died after a workplace incident at the Fernie Memorial Arena on Tuesday have been identified.

According to the B.C. Coroners Service, the victims were Wayne Allan Hornquist, 59, Lloyd Stewart Smith, 52, and Jason Donovan Podloski, 46.

Hornquist and Smith were Fernie residents, while Podloski was from Turner Valley, Alberta.

The three men died while working at the rink on Tuesday as the result of an ammonia leak.

The City of Fernie declared a State of Local Emergency due to the hazardous materials release and a number of properties around the rink were evacuated.
 

The B.C. Coroners Service continues to investigate the circumstances of these deaths in an effort to avoid similar tragedies in the future.

WorkSafeBC, Technical Safety BC, the RCMP and the employer are also investigating the incident.

The families of the three deceased men have been notified.
