Mounties in a BC city are investigating a series of “extremely disturbing” thefts from a cemetery.

About a dozen bronze vases have been taken from grave sites over the last two weeks, leaving bereaved loved ones “simply outraged.”

Nanaimo RCMP said the first theft is believed to have occurred close to May 12, while the most recent theft was on May 17.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said the case “doesn’t [make] any sense at all” because “there is really no commercial value for bronze.”

The thefts occurred at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Nanaimo.

Police said the ornaments were bought by mourning family members and filled with flowers and personal items before being displayed in the cemetery.

“These thefts are extremely disturbing,” Cst. O’Brien said in a public notice.

“First and foremost the families who purchased the vases then placed them next to their loved ones are simply outraged that someone would resort to stealing something as personal as this."

The RCMP said no suspects have yet been found.

Anyone with information about the ornaments is urged to call 250-754-2345.
