A driver of a Corvette caused quite a bit of chaos yesterday as the long weekend came to an end.

According to the RCMP E Division Traffic Services, officers dealt with a driver that had fled from police on Highway 97 C near Paradise Valley at around 3 p.m.

The driver sped past police at a high speed while they were out of their vehicles dealing with another matter.

For public safety reasons, police in Merritt did not engage in a pursuit. The Kelowna RCMP were notified that the driver was heading to their area.

Officers followed in the direction of the Corvette and came across two collisions.

The driver of the Corvette had side-swiped another vehicle and kept going. They then rear-ended a travel trailer being pulled by a pickup truck. Police said no one was injured.

“The now demolished Corvette was abandoned by its driver, who fled the scene on foot. With the assistance of members of the public, police were able to contain and apprehend the individual who is well known to police,” said in a release from Traffic Services.

The investigation is continuing and charges have yet to be laid, however the individual is expected to face several Criminal Code and Motor Vehicle Act charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to remain at the scene of an accident (x2) and driving while suspended.

“This is a shining example of the cooperation and communication between the Merritt RCMP and Central Okanagan Traffic Services that resulted in the apprehension of a dangerous driver,” Traffic Services said.

“Police would like to thank those members of the public who assisted police and are grateful no one was seriously injured.”

Anyone with information about this incident that has not spoken with police is asked to call COTS in Kelowna at 250-491-5354.
