A caiman has a new life at the Victoria Butterfly Gardens after being rescued from wildlife trafficking.

Javier is a dwarf caiman, and is being taken care of by the butterfly garden on behalf of Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The species is found throughout the southern half of South America.

The Butterfly Gardens says that Javier was found being held illegally without the necessary permits. They add that crocodilians of all species are not legal to keep as pets in BC, and they are “extremely difficult and expensive to properly care for.”

While legal proceedings are underway to determine its future, the gardens will be Javier's temporary home.

“Under the guidance of our dedicated animal care professionals, the caiman will receive comprehensive veterinary care, enrichment activities, and behavioural training to ensure its well-being and adaptation to its new surroundings,” the garden says.

“In addition to serving as an ambassador for its species, the caiman will play a vital role in allowing visitors to learn about the importance of conservation and the threats facing wildlife in their natural habitats.”
