The fine for “dooring” cyclists in British Columbia is increasing next week.

From Monday, anyone who opens the door of a parked car when it is not reasonably safe to do so will be fined $368.

The fine is currently $81.

“It will help increase safety by making drivers more aware of how opening their car door unsafely can seriously injure an approaching cyclist,” the government explained.

“At the same time, a public education and awareness campaign is being launched.”

A higher proportion of people in BC commute using active transportation, including bikes, than anywhere else in Canada.

About 30% of school-aged children use active transportation, as well as 8% of university students.
