Douglas Bowker is looking forward to getting back into a pair of hobbies after winning big in the lottery.

Bowker secured the $500,000 Extra prize from the Lotto 6/49 draw on March 16.

The Esquimalt resident was at the Metchosin Country Store in Greater Victoria when he scanned his ticket and discovered his win.

“The sun was glaring on the display,” he explained. “I couldn’t see the amount and asked the retailer to scan the ticket and they could not believe it. I was just scattered when I heard the amount!”

After learning of his life-changing win, he decided to keep it to himself after receiving some advice from a friend.

“I had a friend tell me, if I win, to clam up until I got all my senses together,” Bowker noted.

With his bank account looking a little more flush than it did a couple of weeks ago, Bowker is looking forward to joining a golf club again.

He’s also considering buying a small boat to get back into fishing.

“It fluctuates between disbelief and, ‘Oh, I can buy those cars I wanted!’ I will just figure it out as I go along and take my time,” he said.

The winning ticket was purchased at Fraser 25 on Esquimalt Road in Victoria.
