A horse rescued from this summer’s wildfires has found a happy home just in time for the holidays.

Malachi, a large white draft horse, was found in a hot spot in Williams Lake when wildfires were devastating the area.

At the time, Malachi’s hooves were badly overgrown, making it hard for him to even walk.

But after months of rehabilitation, Malachi has found a home on a 80-acre ranch in B.C.’s Heffley Creek Valley, where his new guardian, Hillary Schneider, runs a retreat centre.

“There’s tons of space! He seems content to be accepted as part of the group – he’s not challenging the herd dynamics in any way, which is good,” said Schneider in a press release.

“It’s important to me that my horses have choice – I always give them a choice – it’s empowering for them and I think they deserve it.”

According to Schneider, Malachi has even found a new BFF in the herd who has grown rather fond of the big draft horse.

“There was a connection for sure… he’s a very gentle soul,” says Schneider. “He likes being around the herd and he’s really settling in nicely.”
