The renegade, 1,400-pound bull reported missing from the BC Livestock Producers Co. in Kamloops this August was located in September in a farmer's field nearby Knutsford, according to yard staff with the BC Livestock Producers Co.
The rancher who found the bull dropped him off at the yard a couple of weeks ago, said Cheryl Newman, yard staff of BC Livestock Producers Co.
"He was still jumpy when he came in, so we put him in a high pen," she said.
Newman said this type of escape was abnormal.
"You get escapees, but usually they don't get that far. This one was a strange one," she said.
Newman figures he was heading back to where he came from: Savona.
"They seem to just know where they came from," she said.
The Kamloops RCMP had a search party working to locate the bull. According to Cpl. Jodi Shelki, the bull was spotted several times, but it was difficult to get close to him.
"He was spooked away from us. When we got close to him, he'd take off in another direction," said Cpl. Shelkie.
The RCMP concluded their search on September 6th when it was last seen heading to Knutsford.
"No other reports of the bull had been reported to us. So we spoke to the owner who said that they were in contact with several ranchers in Knutsford and they were going to be keeping a lookout for the bull," said Cpl. Shelkie.
Since the Livestock Yard raises cattle for food, the bull's fate was inevitable and shortly after returning, Newman said he was sent the butcher's.
Here's a look back on the bull's final journey and route he traveled (a rough estimation):
August 28th:
-
A 1,400-pound, tan-coloured bull escaped from the BC Livestock Yard in Kamloops and was reported missing by Kamloops RCMP Cpl., Jodi Shelkie. The bull headed out along the Trans Canada Highway.
-
Police received a tip that the bull was spotted between Tanager Drive and the Pineridge Golf Course.
The distance between the BC Livestock Producers Co. and the Pineridge Golf Course is about 11 kilometres.
The distance between the Pineridge Golf Course and Highland Road is about seven kilometres.
-
Conservation Officers began searching after the bull was reported being seen near Highland Road and the Owl Road dump.
-
Cpl. Shelkie said RCMP had spotted the bull but were unable to get close enough.
August 31st:
The bull meandered for a couple of kilometres.
-
The bull was spotted near Dallas and Juniper Ridge but it had left by the time RCMP arrived.
September 1st:
-
There was a sighting in Peterson Creek, but it was reported an hour later and had moved on by the time RCMP arrived.
The distance is approximately 10 kilometres.
-
Later that day, there were several sightings at Summit Drive and Albert McGowan Park.
The distance is approximately three kilometres.
-
The bull was last seen heading to Knutsford.
September 6th:
The distance between Albert McGowan Park and Knutsford is approximately 6.9 kilometres via HWY 5A, but the bull's route is unknown, as well as the exact farmer's field he was located in.
-
RCMP end their search.
-
Later that week the bull was located in a field belonging to a rancher near Highway 5A.
-
After speaking with several ranchers in the Knutsford area, the specific name of the ranch where the bull was found was unknown.
-
The ranch dropped the bull off with a load of cattle at BC Livestock Producers Co. that same week and put in a separate pen because he was still jumpy.
-
The bull has since been taken to the butcher's with the rest of the cattle.
The driving distance from BC Livestock Producers Co. to Knutsford is about 35 kilometres. However, it is safe to assume that the bull did not follow the exact vehicle or bicycle trajectory provided in Google Maps. It is likely the bull traveled far more than 35 kilometres on last his road trip.
