Employees at ICBC’s call centre have been keeping warm answering thousands of “dial a claim” calls during this week’s cold snap.

According to the insurance agency, more than 18,000 claim centre calls were made during this week’s snowstorm, with 12,537 of those coming solely from the Lower Mainland.

The data reports that Monday, Jan. 13, was ICBC's busiest dau with 3,539 calls coming in from the Lower Mainland alone and 5,075 in total from across BC.

However, each call doesn't necessarily represent a new claim and in some cases, customers call repeatedly in an attempt to file one claim.

So-called "ice bombs" have been responsible on the Port Mann, Alex Fraser and Golden Ears bridge have been responsible for a total of 144 claims.

ICBC is reminding people to make sure their vehicles are properly equipped for winter driving, including having winter tires and full reservoirs of wiper fluid.

Drivers are also being reminded to slow down, use their headlights and leave plenty of space between cars.

Anyone involved in a crash can report their claim by phone or online 24 hours a day at 604-520-8222, or 1-800-910-4222.
