RCMP in Sicamous have gone public with a plea for the safe return of a jewelry box containing a dead man’s ashes.
Police believe the thief likely wasn’t aware the distinctive wooden box held the cremated ashes of the owner’s father.
The box was stolen sometime between Nov. 9 and Nov. 12 from a storage locker on Hillier Road in Sicamous.
According to Mounties, three storage units were broken into at the same facility during that time period, however many large valuable items such as gasoline generators, leather furniture and fishing gear were not touched.
"I believe that the person who stole this jewelry box, which was a wedding gift to our victim, may have had no idea that it contained the ashes of her late father. It is extremely important to this woman, that her father's ashes and the jewelry box be returned," stated Sgt. Murray McNeil, Sicamous RCMP Detachment Commander.
"The wooden box can be returned to the front counter of the Sicamous RCMP Detachment with no questions asked to the person who returns it and we will make arrangements to return it to its rightful owner."
