A shallow, but powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Vancouver Island on Wednesday night.
The US Geological Survey measured the magnitude-6.2 earthquake less than 200 kilometres from the northwest tip of Vancouver Island.
It had a depth of just 10 km.

The tremor happened around 9:30 p.m. and any fears of a potential tsunami were quashed by the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center.
It said that powerful waves were not expected just five minutes after the quake and that message was relayed by Emergency Info BC by 9:40 p.m.

Wednesday’s seismic incident was the most powerful earthquake to hit B.C. in nearly nine months.
On Oct. 21, 2018, a trio of major earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.5, 6.5 and 6.8 struck within an hour of each other in the same area.
