A British Columbia man has been fined and temporarily banned from hunting after killing a therapy dog he claims to have mistaken for a wolf.
The man – who has not been named – pleaded guilty on Wednesday to shooting the dog near Whistler in 2017.
He was fined $4,000 and banned from hunting for four years.
The man, from Squamish, also pleaded guilty to hunting wildlife out of season.
Conservation officers were called about the shooting back in Sept. 2017.
The dog was being walked by two women with a group of other dogs in woodland between Squamish and Whistler.
Authorities said they want to remind hunters that it is their responsibility to be “cognizant of their surroundings and other resource users” and “to know the regulations.”
