The Independent Investigation Office of BC (IIO BC) was notified of a police involved shooting in Shawnigan Lake yesterday.

Officers from the Shawnigan Lake RCMP were following up on an assault investigation in the 1100 block of Mill Bay Road in the Vancouver Island community.

Shortly after 12 p.m., members attended a home with the intention of arresting a man in connection with the incident. Upon entering the residence, the officers were met with a man who they say advanced on them with an “edged weapon."

The RCMP say that officers attempted to deploy a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) without success. Shots were fired by police and the man was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

No police officers nor any other members of the public were injured.

IIO BC will be investigating the shooting. Additional RCMP resources have been deployed to Shawnigan Lake in the meantime in order to maintain policing services.
