Man lights himself on fire inside Vancouver McDonald's in bizarre incident

A scary scene unfolded at a Vancouver McDonald’s on Thursday night.

A distraught man in his 30s entered the fast-food chain, near Commercial Drive and East Broadway, around 9 p.m.

He was carrying a gasoline can and threatening to harm himself, at which point the police were called to the scene.

Attempts to negotiate with the man were unsuccessful and he lit himself on fire, along with parts of the restaurant.

Officers used less lethal arwen rounds to subdue the man and members of Vancouver Fire and Rescue used a high pressure water hose on the man.

He was transported to hospital with serious burn injuries and the restaurant sustained some property damage in the ordeal.

The Independent Investigations Office is now investigating the incident and no further information is being released at this time.
