A GoFundMe is well on its way to $35,000 after a mother of three suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the face while helping a suicidal man.
Regina Hampson of Nanaimo is a mother of three. On Saturday, a tragic incident at her and her partner Jason’s home left her seriously injured.
According to the page, the family had taken in someone who was trying to get their life back on track and was silently suffering with mental health issues.
Regina walked in on the man as he was suffering a mental breakdown. He reportedly had a loaded shotgun, and intended on using it on himself.
“Regina intervened, and there was a struggle,” explains the fundraising page. “As a result, Regina was shot with a 12 gauge shotgun.”
The majority of the damage was done to Regina’s face and hand, and she is currently in Vancouver undergoing surgery.
The fundraiser stresses that the man did not intentionally harm Regina, and that they sincerely hope he is able to get help.
“Anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing Regina, knows how incredibly kind and loving she is. She is an exceptional mother and stepmother, an incredibly supportive partner and friend, and a genuinely good person. She saved this man’s life, and sacrificed her own well-being during the process. She is selfless beyond measure. This woman is a warrior, a hero,” the page adds.
“We, her friends, family, and community, are offered this opportunity to rally around her and show her just how much we love and appreciate her. Let’s support this amazing woman, during her time of need, just as she would do for any one of us.”
The page explains that Regina’s road to recovery will be a long one, and she will need to take time off to heal.
However, Regina and Jason have requested that 20% of the funds raised be donated to local mental health supports.
“In true fashion, Jason and Regina, selflessly, would like this to serve as a reminder, that mental health issues are no joking matter. This is a tragic incident that could have potentially been avoided if better supports were in place for those suffering from mental health issues.”
