BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) will soon move on from plastic bags at its 197 stores across the province.
According to a release from the BC government, the changeover will be staggered across the province beginning this month on Vancouver Island, before Metro Vancouver makes the switch in February 2020 and the rest of the province converting to paper bags by March 9, 2020.
Richmond based company Bulldog Bag has been selected to produce the new paper bags, which will have the strength to withstand an approximate load of six bottles of wine or a six-pack and two bottles of wine.
The LDB currently distributes 22-million plastic bags a year throughout the province, but will charge customers per paper bag as an incentive to bring reusable bags when shopping.
The new paper bags will contain a minimum of 40% post-consumer recycled content and are 100% recyclable and compostable.
