Are you getting sick of using the same artificial Christmas tree year after year?
Or maybe you just don’t want to pay a crazy amount to get a real one from a tree lot.
Either way, it might be the year to go out and cut down your own Christmas tree and it’s always best to do something legally.
If you want to cut down your own tree this year, you can obtain a permit online to do so in almost all areas of B.C.
You can also contact your local natural resource district office or FrontCounter BC office.
The free-use permits are for personal use only and it’s illegal to sell a tree or multiple trees cut down under a Christmas tree permit.
You also can’t just cut one down a tree anywhere you’d like, as you have to stick to certain authorized areas.

You should also keep the following tips in mind when going out to chop down a Christmas tree:
- Leave home prepared. Bring ropes, gloves, tools, tire chains, a first aid kit, a mobile phone and warm clothing.
- Drive carefully. Be prepared for logging trucks.
- Make sure to find the right tree before cutting. Some permits specify only one tree can be cut.
- Do not leave a pointed stump as this may cause injury to livestock, wildlife, pets or humans.
- Choose a tree that can be cut near the base and is easy to transport. Wasted tree remains left in the forest can form a summer fire hazard.
- Clean up and remove all debris associated with the activity.
