It was all hands on deck after an inmate escaped from Matsqui Institution on Thursday.

It started shortly before 3 pm, when Correctional Service of Canada officers were escorting the federal offender to a medical appointment.

According to police, he escaped from the custody of the officers, who were forced to discharge their firearms while trying to apprehend him once again.

The Abbotsford Police Department then responded to the report of shots fired at Abbotsford Way and Marshall Road.

With the assistance of police dogs and an RCMP helicopter, the APD was able to take the suspect back into custody a short time later without incident.

There were no injuries reported and police say there’s no further risk to the public.

Major crime detectives have now taken over the investigation.
