British Columbia’s very own comedy legend, Ryan Reynolds, has been awarded the Governor General’s National Arts Centre Award.
The Governor General's Performing Arts Awards are Canada's most distinctive award for excellence in the performing arts.
Early this morning, Reynolds took to his social media to post a reaction to a heartfelt video that was made in his honour.
“I’m not crying. It’s just maple syrup,” said Reynolds with his signature comedic wit as he thanked Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon.
Steven Page, one of the founders of the Barenaked Ladies, can be seen playing air guitar with an axe while decked out in a plaid shirt.
References to Alex Trabek, Bruno Gerussi, William Shatner, the Canucks, Vancouver and more are made in the video – making for a truly patriotic song that is perfect for Canada's favorite son.
Last night, Canada honoured me with a Governor General's Award and this video. I'm not crying. It's just maple syrup. @stevenpage is a friend and legend for wasting this amazing song on me. Thank you to Her Excellency, @GGCanada, Mary Simon. #GGAwards @CanadasNAC I'm a wreck. pic.twitter.com/0ALteFw2QN

As one of Canada’s most beloved actors, Reynolds is known for his contributions to multiple national charities like the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.
Last year, Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively donated $1 million to Food Banks Canada and Feeding America to support people impacted by the pandemic.
True to nature, Reynolds made an emotional post with a touch of humour following the video.
“I’m glad I don't have to be dead to experience something like this. I’m so beyond touched right now,” said Reynolds.
“I recommend making a list of people you appreciate, then immediately telling them. You don't even have to write this list with the blood of your enemies. Just a regular pen works.”
