Shoreline cleanup in Vancouver turns up message in a bottle and 215 kgs of litter

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup came to Iona Beach in Vancouver on September 16th, where more than 350 volunteers tackled the task of removing more than 215 kgs of litter.

The Cleanup proved that there really are some weird things in the ocean when volunteers found a mysterious message in a bottle with a request for help - and cheese.

The Vancouver International Airport posted a photo on Twitter of a bottle found at the cleanup by a volunteer, which includes a note that says “"HELP! Running short of supplies off Bowen Island, Send wine cheese & crackers."

The Vancouver International Airport partnered with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup to make the event possible.

Marine debris can be odd, as well as harmful. OceanWise put together a list of some other creepy finds that have been pulled from the ocean over the years - including part of a spaceship.

In 2017, volunteers coordinated 1,156 cleanups and collected 47,794 kg of litter on 12,045 km of Canadian shoreline. To find out more about The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, click here.
